Cary, came to Nashville in late 2010 from Ireland with an academic background in Peace Studies and Women’s Studies. Having worked in NGO advocacy and policy making, she continues to be drawn as an artist to intersecting themes of politics, theologies and ethics.
As a collaborator in Belfast’s theo-dramatic and a/theistic performance art collective, ikon, from 2002-2010, Cary found herself moving progressively from writing for performance to the visual arts as her primary mode of expression and now works in a variety of mixed media on a range of scales.
In March 2011, she was awarded the purchase prize in Downtown Presbyterian Church’s annual D.I.G. show. She became an artist-in-residence in 2013.
In addition to numerous shows in DPC's Browsing Room Gallery, Cary has exhibited locally in both solo and group shows, including Twist & Vanderbilt, in digital and mixed media, encaustics, & larger scale installations.
With a strong interest in the intersection between art and religious experience, she is a freelance writer, and most recently was a contributor to the Common English Bible's Women's edition (published Fall, 2016).
She is a workshop leader at DPC with a focus on learning and spiritual development through artistic expression and has been a contributor to the Festival of Homiletics and the UK's Greenbelt Festival.
Cary is currently a Ruling Elder in DPC and co-chairs the Worship & Arts committee with Dixie Williamson.
